From securing the infrastructure of one of the world's largest oil companies to protecting hospital systems for the delivery of top notch patient care to keeping customers’ financial data available, these customers are leveraging technology to drive true business results. Representing a wide range of industries and geographies, the winners of the 2007 Visionary Award include IT leaders from Baptist Health South Florida, Chevron Information Technology Co., GE Global Infrastructure Services, Honeywell Aerospace, ING Investment Management Group, The Netherlands Ministry of Defence, Sistema Usiminas and Wipro Limited.

“As the global economy continues to expand and interactions become increasingly interconnected, companies must take the right measures to minimize their exposure to risk and increase IT efficiency,” said John W. Thompson, chairman and CEO, Symantec. “This year’s Visionary Award winners have demonstrated their success leveraging Symantec technology to protect their information and systems.”

Baptist Health South Florida Leverages IT to Support High Quality Care
Allen Montgomery, director of information technology at Baptist Health South Florida, South Florida’s largest not-for-profit healthcare organization, is recognized for implementing comprehensive data center management and enterprise storage solutions to help improve patient care while improving IT efficiency. Baptist Health implemented a remote ICU monitoring application using Veritas Cluster Server, which contributed to a 27 percent decrease in ICU mortality rates.
Montgomery’s team deployed Symantec software for a backup and recovery system that saves more than $7.5 million annually, and using the same solution as the basis for a storage consolidation initiative, saved more than $1 million in hardware and IT labor costs. The team’s implementation also helps ensure systems are compliant with IT policies, reducing the preparation time of monthly security audits from 12 hours to just 15 minutes.

Chevron Information Technology Co. Strengthens Enterprise Security to Ensure IT Compliance Rich Jackson, general manager of Chevron’s Global Information Risk Management unit is recognized for improving Chevron’s enterprise security posture to ensure the company’s heterogeneous and global IT infrastructure complies with government regulations and industry standards. As part of the second largest integrated energy company in the United States, Jackson’s team launched an Information Compliance Automation System initiative to standardize and automate its diverse compliance and audit processes. Using Symantec software as the foundation of its compliance framework, Chevron launched a three-year plan to improve information protection processes, optimize the use of enterprise resources and improve enterprise security. With the rollout still in progress, Jackson expects a 50 per cent improvement in operational efficiency, representing total savings of more than $12 million on audit and compliance costs.

GE Global Infrastructure Services Boosts Storage Availability with Symantec
Gary Scott, senior architect and team leader for GE Global Infrastructure Services (GE GIS), a corporate component of the Fortune 10 Company General Electric, is recognized for reducing IT costs through data center standardization and the implementation of a storage management solution. Standardization is a key initiative for Scott and his team, whose responsibility is the management of the company’s server infrastructure, which includes more than 2,200 servers located across the globe. Leveraging Veritas Storage Foundation, Cluster Server and CommandCentral Storage, Scott’s team recovered five terabytes of production storage to the business, representing immediate cost savings of $200,000, while increasing ongoing billable storage availability by 45 percent. Despite its heterogeneous environment, software infrastructure standardization is also helping GE GIS ensure confidence in application availability, maintaining uptime ratings across all platforms of at least 98 percent.

ING Investment Management Group drives down Data Storage costs with Symantec Mark Kolodzej, vice president of IT and head of the infrastructure services department at ING Investment Management Group, is recognized for leveraging technology to ensure confidence in the integrity of client communications while reducing data storage costs. The solution also includes a tiered storage model designed to optimize storage utilization and availability, which is expected to save more than $1 million in storage hardware cost avoidance over the next three years. The team’s implementation has already resulted in more than $300,000 in annual IT labor cost and end-user productivity savings. As the principal asset management division of one of the world’s largest financial services corporations, e-mail security and compliance are high priorities.
Kolodzej and his team deployed Symantec Enterprise Vault for e-mail and discovery, resulting in a 40 percent reduction in e-mail and file system storage requirements.

The Netherlands Ministry of Defence Secures E-mail Communication While Reducing Costs
Albert-Jan Boer, senior manager of communication services for the Defence Telematics Organisation, the IT supplier for the Ministry of Defence, is recognized for ensuring the availability and integrity of e-mail communications supporting more than 65,000 civilian and military employees in the Dutch armed forces. Since e-mail is essential to national security, Boer’s team must meet service level agreements (SLAs) that require rapid restoration of the e-mail system after a failure. Boer and his team implemented Symantec Enterprise Vault, which not only ensures that SLAs are met, but has also resulted in significant cost savings, cost avoidance and productivity improvements. The Ministry of Defence projects labor cost savings of more than $1 million over the next three years because its Intelligence Group can conduct e-discovery without IT assistance.

Choose protection, choose F-Secure

F-Secure protection technologies have scored high in two recent independent tests. Reliability of protection is the core value that F-Secure solutions provide to their users, and these tests substantiate the ability of F-Secure solutions to live up to this ambition.

One of today's most challenging IT security problems are so called zero-day attacks (new unknown malware for which no signature detection exists). Recently AV-comparatives ( http://www.av-comparatives.org/) tested F-Secure's behavior-based detection technology F-Secure DeepGuard for its ability to stop malware that is not found with traditional signature based virus scanning. F-Secure DeepGuard passed the test winning the "Proactive Protection Award" and was able to block all malware used for the test, proving that DeepGuard is able to do an excellent job of identifying and stopping previously unknown "zero-day" threats. The F-Secure DeepGuard technology is based on pervasive monitoring of program behavior during execution, a method which significantly improves the overall level of protection compared to traditional signature based file analysis. This approach enables the security solution to see beneath the surface of the system to detect and stop threats that were designed to pass all traditional defenses unnoticed.

"Our test consisted of new virus samples for which no signatures yet exist. The fact that F-Secure could stop them all with its DeepGuard technology proves that such a behavior-based analysis of malware during run-time can be quite effective in stopping zero-day threats", says Andreas Clementi, project manager at the AV-Comparatives test laboratory.

Despite the importance of behavior-based protection, a core capability of any antivirus solution is the ability to detect malware that is known and can be identified with traditional signature based virus scanning. A test done by AV-Test.org (http://www.av-test.org ) in May 2007 included over 600.000 malware samples. F-Secure achieved a very high detection rate, and was able to detect 978 samples more than Symantec, 42.226 samples that Trend Micro did not detect, and 64.653 samples more than McAfee. F-Secure also detected 105.391 samples that Microsoft's solution missed.

"F-Secure is a challenger in the global antivirus market, and as such we need to perform better than our big competitors. Our systematic focus on innovative protection technology development and state-of-the-art research coupled with highly automated proprietary analysis systems is producing results that our customers see as a very highly reliable protection of their PC's and smartphones" says Pirkka Palomäki, Senior Vice President of Research and Development at F-Secure.

Department of Science & Technology (DST) and Indo-US Science & Technology Forum (IUSSTF) announced successful certification of 6 Master Trainers who were selected from a large pool of faculty to participate in a global class of 50 faculty and business incubator managers, gathered from various corners of the world. This exclusive Technology entrepreneurship training was organized at the University of California, Berkeley by Intel to demonstrate and share tools & methodologies that enable entrepreneurial training and development in higher education.

The above program is part of the DST, Intel Technology India and IUSSTF signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) (April 2007) to jointly organize Technology Entrepreneur Programs. The endeavour is to develop an ecosystem that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship among young professionals. This public-private partnership involves an investment of over Rs. 2.1 crore by the three organizations for the year 2007, to encourage entrepreneurship as a career option for college students and aspiring start-ups. The partners believe that the dynamic exchange of knowledge and information with premier institutions in India and USA through proposed programs, will create sustainable, long-term networks and platforms that would help foster a culture of technopreneurship in Indian academia.

The objectives of the program are as follows:

§ Create an entrepreneurial ecosystem in India
§ Boost entrepreneurial spirit in Indian academia & scientific enterprises
through the Business Plan competitions
§ Build a curriculum on Technology Entrepreneurship for Indian academia

Speaking about the program, Rahul Bedi, Director, Corporate Affairs, Intel said, "We believe technology is the key to global competitiveness in today's world. For countries to become or remain competitive, their universities must produce a pipeline of technical innovators who contribute to the advancement of local technology, and the local economy. In an effort to encourage technology entrepreneurship programs in India, we are partnering with like minded bodies - Department of Science and Technology and Indo-US Science and Technology Forum to encourage programs that build local innovation capacity through entrepreneurship so students and young professionals can create entrepreneurial spirit and activity throughout the country".

Added B.K Shukla, Scientist, DST, "The program provided a good opportunity to interact and share experiences on entrepreneurship development with the participants from various countries. It also provided the occasion to establish linkages with various institutions across the globe which can be leveraged for furthering entrepreneurship in our country. I am sure that global faculty colloquium would definitely help Indian faculty to improve our ongoing entrepreneurship development programs."

"The program was very useful. It gave direct exposure to teaching methodology, and an understanding of the overall university ecosystem for entrepreneurship. The program provided a platform to interact with International faculty from many countries who brought in tremendous value from their respective areas of specialty," said Poyni Bhatt, Chief Administrative Officer, Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, IIT Bombay who was one of the Indian participants at UC Berkeley.

Under this initiative, at UC Berkeley, six selected Indian participants underwent two weeks of training on rigorous details of entrepreneurship education and ecosystem. With the help of the program, participants have been provided skills to become "master faculty" and train others in their communities on entrepreneurial education. The 'master faculty' will now carry out four regional training programs to teach technology entrepreneurship to academicians in the country. The academicians, who will be trained, will further train students and encourage a culture of entrepreneurship in the country. This will ensure proliferation and adoption of technology entrepreneurship curriculum at a much faster rate and scale. The 4 regional training programs are being held in the months of May, June, July, August 2007. By the end of the year, the program aims to build a pipeline of 10 certified master trainers and 80 regional trainers.

Telsima unveils its strategy for scaling up market penetration in APAC

Telsima, a leading provider of wireless broadband and voice compression solutions, today unveiled its strategy of scaling up its market penetration in the APAC market through its two product lines StarMAX™ and TelsiNex™. It endeavours to fulfill the long-promised benefits of BWA in high-growth, low broadband penetration, price-sensitive markets by leveraging the benefits of standardization, innovative design and large market size.

Its recent Tier I operator customer wins in India enables it to focus on price/performance points appropriate for emerging markets and to compete very effectively on a worldwide basis.

VP Sales and Marketing, APAC, Protip Ghose says, “Telsima is committed towards enhancing broadband penetration in low penetration markets. We believe that WiMAX is certainly the technology that will meet the broadband needs of the APAC region. We also believe that the business model and product innovations that have enabled us to provide winning solutions in India can be quickly replicated in these countries as the operator/user challenges and requirements are essentially similar. While we are armed with the best technology and award winning product portfolio and are ready to penetrate the APAC market, we appreciate the fact that it is our VAR partners who are bringing to table the market understanding, the expertise in handling region specific requirements and the pre-established relations with the customers. It is with this faith in our existing and potential partners that we are re-enforcing our focus on APAC and are scaling our penetration in H2/2007 through this indirect sales strategy”.

As part of this market penetration planning, in HI/2007, Telsima ramped up manufacturing, scaled up its Asia based Sales & Marketing team and invested substantially in its R&D center in Bangalore. It is now rapidly putting together RF planning, installation commissioning and network deployment teams through VARS across APAC.

Telsima’s StarMAX™ line of carrier grade WiMAX solutions for BWA has a product range that targets operators seeking standards based, quick time-to-market solutions for enterprise and residential customers. Telsima also adds value to the customer by bringing in expertise on RF planning, network optimization and network O&M through its global TAC support in India.

Director Product Marketing, Telsima, K. Ravichandran says, “Telsima is the only vendor today offering nomadic solutions for 802.16-2004 TDD with certified WiMAX interoperable solutions to suit all requirements of operators. In 2006, Telsima unveiled TRUFLE™, its innovative 4G-ready platform that promises a disruptive impact in the mobile market by enabling media rich mobile broadband services in 802.16d and 802.16e-2005 Mobile WiMAX networks. Telsima’s market leading fixed and mobile WiMAX ‘D+E DualMode’ StarMAX™ 6400, a 4U, 4 sector, base station supporting STC/MRC allows operators to build fixed WiMAX networks today and migrate to mobile WiMAX networks within the same frequency spectrum later. This huge competitive advantage that Telsima offers is bound to grab operator attention in APAC countries as no operator wants to lose market share today nor wishes to invest in a network that is not future proof”.

With the market acceptance of 16’d’ and D+E Dual Mode solutions, Telsima is readying to complement its StarMAX family with a Mobile StarMAX 16e family. It is gearing up for Certification of Wave 1 Mobile WiMAX products scheduled to begin in H2/2007.

Director Sales, S.K Jain highlights, “Our DCME Product line TelsiNex, developed and manufactured in India, can carry 16 E1s on one E1 bearer with excellent voice quality having an MOS greater than 3.9 under full load. TelsiNex is being used by all tier-1 telecom operators in India and by many operators in APAC, Africa and Latin America. The ROI is very quick. TelsiNex uses Telsima’s own DSP chips TXS-1000 which has been sold all over the world. We are confident that TelsiNex will continue serving the APAC market and deepen its penetration in the years to come”.

Telsima is exhibiting its product portfolio at Communicasia 2007 at Booth # 4D1-10. It will showcase its TelsiNex line and the award winning StarMAX 6400 BS and SS 2130, which was nominated as a finalist in Industry Choice ‘Best of WiMAX World’ award category at Vienna.

Now, Physicians Endoscopy Center is among the first endoscopy center in Houston, Texas to introduce the technology as part of a new endoscope platform to help doctors diagnose diseases in the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for men and women combined in the U.S.

Compared to conventional systems, high-definition endoscopy, combined with Narrow Band Imaging(TM), provides doctors with sharper images and better contrast, which in turn may help them to better detect lesions during examinations when using the wide-angle colonoscope. As a result, patients may receive more accurate diagnoses. The new system can also shorten procedure times for patients.

Dr. Marc Kudisch, Medical Director, is one of the doctors at Physicians Endoscopy Center who already uses the new endoscope platform, the world's first to deliver both HDTV and Narrow Band Imaging(TM) (NBI) technologies.
Called EVIS EXERA II(TM), the 180 series from Olympus provides doctors with enhanced observation capabilities, and has been shown to reduce overall procedure time when used with a new wide-angle scope offered as part of the
180 series.

This new technology will be of great benefit to the community as we screen for early changes in the mucous membranes associated with cancers of the esophagus, stomach, and colon," said Dr. Kudisch. "Eliminating the
abnormally appearing internal lining of these organs before it develops into cancer, is our objective."

The HDTV signal from the endoscope platform's video processor is designed to produce an impressive 1080 lines of resolution, more than twice the number of scan lines used by conventional systems, offering doctors breathtaking images of the colon with a high level of detail and color. NBI is a new image processing technique which takes advantage of the scattering and absorption properties of human tissue, thereby improving visual contrast on mucosal surfaces during endoscopic observation of the GI tract.

The result is remarkably clear views of anatomical structures and fine capillary patterns of the surface of the colon, which are normally difficult to distinguish.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) projects that colon and rectal cancer will kill 55,170 Americans this year. The ACS also points out that the 5-year survival rate for people whose CRC is treated in an early stage, before it has spread, is greater than 90%.

The ACS recommends that beginning at age 50, both men and women should be screened for colon and rectal cancer. People with CRC risk factors, such as a personal history of CRC or adenomatous polyps or a strong family history of CRC or polyps, should talk to their doctor about starting CRC screening earlier and/or undergoing screening more often(1).

Apple announces new Mac OS X Server Leopard

Apple® has launched groundbreaking new features of Mac OS® X Server version 10.5 Leopard that make it even easier for users to set up and manage. Scheduled to ship in October, Leopard Server is the most significant improvement to the server operating system since Mac OS X Server was launched, introducing new features such as a wiki server, making it easy to connect groups over a shared intranet; Podcast Producer, the ideal way to automatically produce and publish podcasts to iTunes® or a blog; and Spotlight™ Server to quickly find content stored on other servers. Leopard Server also includes the new iCal® Server, based on the CalDAV open standard that works with Leopard’s new iCal application.

Small businesses and workgroups without an IT department can take advantage of Leopard Server’s ability to automatically configure Leopard clients for use on the server, including file sharing, Mail, iCal, iChat, Address Book and VPN. Leopard Server also includes a new setup interface with a built-in Network Health Check, a new Server Preferences application and a server status Dashboard widget.

With the wiki server, groups can easily create and edit collaborative web pages, called wikis, with a few clicks of a mouse. The wiki server also maintains a complete history to restore previous entries and merge or compare different versions. Podcast Producer is the easiest way for anyone to record content, automatically upload it to the server and convert it into a podcast. Using Xgrid™, Podcast Producer can leverage Macs on the network to encode the video, and the podcast can then be delivered over the Internet to a blog, iTunes, or even to multimedia enabled mobile phones over high speed wireless networks using QuickTime® Streaming Server.

Apple has made scheduling across different calendar programs simple with iCal Server to coordinate events, schedule meetings and track time more effectively. iCal Server uses the open CalDAV standard for integration with leading calendar programs, including iCal 3 in Leopard, Mozilla’s Sunbird and OSAF’s Chandler. In addition, Apple's Directory makes it easy to search for people in an organization and view their contact information, picture, colleagues, groups and even see a location map.

Spotlight Server takes Spotlight’s lightning-fast desktop search capability to the network server level. Designed for workgroups with shared documents, projects and files, Spotlight Server delivers search results of content stored on mounted network volumes. Content indexing is done automatically and transparently on the server so searches are always fast and up-to-date.

Leopard Server’s core services, including Apache 2, MySQL 5, Postfix, Cyrus, Podcast Producer and QuickTime Streaming Server are 64-bit, allowing users to take full advantage of their 64-bit hardware’s performance and processing power and work with larger data sets. Since Leopard Server is fully 32-bit compatible, users can run 32-bit and 64-bit applications natively side-by-side. Leopard Server is also optimized to take full advantage of Intel’s latest multi-core processors.

Other new features in Leopard Server include:

• Server Admin 4 with new file sharing and permission controls, tiered administration, and options for organizing servers into smart groups;

• iChat Server 2 to securely communicate over instant messaging with others on different systems outside an organization’s firewall;

• External Accounts to enable Leopard users to store their home directory on an external FireWire® or USB portable drive;

• a new System Imaging Utility that uses a workflow-based editor to create customized images that can include Boot Camp® partitions;

• Xgrid 2 featuring GridAnywhere for ad hoc distributed computing in environments without dedicated controllers, and Scoreboard for prioritizing job distribution to the fastest available CPU; and

• QuickTime Streaming Server 6 with support for 3GPP Release 6 bit rate adaptation for smooth streaming when delivering content to mobile phones regardless of network congestion.

Pricing & Availability

Mac OS X Server version 10.5 Leopard is scheduled to ship in October and will be available through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $499 (US) for a 10-client edition and $999 (US) for an unlimited-client edition.
